Air Conditioning Repair You Can Do Yourself
If you are out working around your yard or office on a hot and muggy day and hear the air conditioning unit suddenly go silent, there’s no need to panic. You shouldn’t automatically call for an air conditioning repair contractor. A few things you can check out or do yourself may get things cooling again and for little or no cost to you.
A simple thing like a visual inspection to check that the plug has not been pulled out accidentally may fix things. If the unit is still plugged in, sometimes turning the unit off and then back on again will re-initialize the system and get things running again.
It is also important to check that the breaker or fuse hasn’t blown and to turn off the unit before doing anything else. Flipping the breaker switch off and on may help to get things working again. If your home or office is equipped with a fuse panel try replacing the fuse, even if it looks to be fine. There are a percentage of new fuses that are untested and will not function properly even though they look to be all right. This simple task of replacing a fuse or breaker, if performed by an air conditioning repair professional can be very costly in relation to the work done.
No Cool Air From Unit
Sometimes atmospheric conditions can affect how your air conditioner works. If a cold thermal front passes through your area, ice may form on the surface of the coils, which can have a detrimental effect on the operation of the unit, even causing it to overheat. Inspect the coils for ice build-up through the vent slits in the unit’s casing. If there is ice coating the coils, turn off the unit and wait for the ice to melt. This is the fastest and safest method of doing it. On hot days this won’t take long and will save you the cost of an air conditioning repair visit.
There’s usually a cut-off switch inside your unit, which, in the case of excessive pressure, will shut off power going to the compressor and motor unit before any damage occurs. There will be reset switches near the control panel though in more portable units it may be hard to see or reach.
After you check things over yourself and done away with all obvious choices, you may have little choice but to call for an air conditioning repair contractor. Balance the age of your air conditioning unit against the cost of an air conditioning repair visit. It may be more economical to simply purchase a more modern unit rather that have the old one repaired. The choice is always up to you, you might be able to afford a new unit and need to make the old one work.
